On the delegation’s second day in Guatemala, the laureates visited Casillas to meet with indigenous communities resisting the San Raphael mining project. This was followed by a meeting in which forty women activists from seven municipalities shared their experiences defending the land. On Day Seven the delegates heard from women’s organizations and met with Ivan Velasquez of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala. At 11:00 am the laureates held a press conference in Guatemala City to discuss their visit to Casillas, and what they had learned from the women they’d met with. The afternoon consisted of a visit to the University of San Carlos de Guatemala for a conference and celebration of Rigoberta Menchú Tum’s 25 year anniversary of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. On the final day of #WomenLandPeace, the delegates participated in a Mayan ceremony, heard from incredible women human rights and land defenders, and enjoyed a Marimba performance.
