Restore Brenda Rangel Ortiz’s security detail!
UPDATE: Victor Garcia, Brenda Rangel Ortiz’s husband, was attacked September 22 for his work on disappearances in Mexico. Security measures for Victor, Brenda and their family that were removed in July could have prevented this attack. Join Amnesty International in taking action to restore protection to Victor and Brenda and call for an immediate and full investigation into this latest attack.
Join us to call on Mexican authorities to restore Brenda Rangel Ortiz’s security measures! Tweet at Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Attorney General Arely Gómez González to call for support for Brenda!
Brenda was one of four Mexican defensoras who visited Ottawa in June to spread the word about the human rights crisis in Mexico. Upon her return to Mexico, she was informed that the security measures provided to her by authorities would be cancelled. We call on the Mexican government to restore Brenda’s security detail.
Brenda co-founded Desaparecidos Justicia, an organization of family members in search of disappeared loved ones to raise awareness about disappeared people and advocates for those responsible to be brought to justice. Since 2013, state bodyguards have protected Brenda and her family, because they have experienced harassment and death threats by drug cartel members and state officials in apparent attempt to deter her search for her brother who had disappeared in 2009.
