Stop Killer Robots
The six Nobel Peace Prize Laureates of the Nobel Women’s Initiative are joining international campaigners to call for a ban on autonomous weapons, or “killer robots.”
Automatic weapons are currently being developed with very little transparency. It is likely that these killer robots would be unable to distinguish between combatants and civilians. They would be incapable of showing mercy or recognizing surrender.
Many of the campaigners previously worked with Laureate Jody Williams on a successful international campaign to ban landmines. Williams stated, “I know we can do the same thing with killer robots. I know we can stop them before they hit the battlefield.”
As campaigners around the world emphasize, this is not science fiction – killer robots are in development and pose a real humanitarian threat.
The “Stop the Killer Robot” campaign will launch in April 2013 in the United Kingdom. It will pressure leaders to commit to an international treaty banning killer robots and raise awareness among civil society.
