Ebadi highlights a recent case in which 31 girls were wounded in a fire at a West Azerbayjan Province school; two of the schoolgirls died from their injuries. According to Ebadi, this incident is not uncommon and is a result “of the appalling condition of schools in Iran, which are old and dilapidated.” She provides another example of a case in which more than 50 students were injured or killed in bus crashes during fieldtrips to the former Iran/Iraq war zone.
HIV/AIDS among young people is also a concern. Four percent of Iranian children –some as young as 11 years– are currently infected with HIV. Sexual relations are the primary cause of the increased rate of infection. Yet schools and the media remain silent on sexual and reproductive health issues. Condoms have been banned from import as “luxury items.”
