The Nobel Women’s Initiative and The MATCH International Women’s Fund recently released the report, Strengthening Women’s Rights Organizations Through International Assistance. The report encourages the Canadian government to fund grassroots women’s organizations around the world as a way of making real change. It states that a bottom-up approach to funding will better reach those doing important work in conflict zones or repressive states.
Recent data shows that only 0.3% of gender-focused Canadian aid reaches women’s organizations directly.
Global womens rights activists, Leymah Gbowee and Yanar Mohammed, were in Ottawa last month to discuss the strategies with the Canadian government as part of efforts to increase funding to women’s organizations at the grassroots.
