Meet Mariem Omari, Deputy Director of Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML), an international solidarity network that provides support for women whose lives are shaped by laws and customs said to derive from Islam.
As Deputy Director, Mariem works to support the WLUML network and encourage the involvement of new activists. A committed women’s rights activist herself, Mariem is particularly passionate about supporting new activists in developing a model of sustainable activism. Her deep belief in the importance of SELF Care led her to study yoga therapy in India and most recently Hakomi in the UK.
For the past five years, Mariem has been living and working across the MENA region in Egypt, Palestine, Iraq, Jordan and Tunisia. During that time, she met and worked with some of the most vulnerable women in the region – IDPS, refugees, and survivors of violence. She has since promoted their stories to strengthen the voice for women’s rights and equality.
