Join us on March 5th for a unique evening of theater and lively discussion of environment and indigenous rights in Ottawa – Defending Dissent: When Life and Land are in Peril.
The event will begin with Toronto’s Aluna Theatre’s unique staged reading of the play ‘The Last Walk of Adolfo Ich’ and be followed by a panel discussion with Lolita Chávez and Antonio Catalán of the Indigenous Women’s Association and Human Rights Defenders Unit with participation from KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiative, International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG), and MiningWatch Canada.
The play, The Last Walk of Adolfo Ich, details the case of Adolfo Ich, a Mayan community leader killed in 2009 by security forces contracted by a Canadian mining company in eastern Guatemala. Hearings for the murder begin on March 4 against HudBay and HMI Nickel in Toronto, Canada. The panel will discuss the threats faced by communities and their allies when fighting for land and justice against unfettered mining developments from Guatemala to Canada.
The Nobel Women’s Initiative joins MiningWatch Canada, Peace Brigades International (Canada), PSAC Social Justice Fund, Americas Policy Group, Projet Accompagnement Québec-Guatemala, KAIROS Canada, MiMundo.org, and Aluna Theatre as sponsors of this event.
