We are very excited to invite you to join us online from October 8-16 as the Nobel Women’s Initiative and a diverse group of accomplished women travel to Canada’s Oil Sands. The group – led by Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams – is interested in learning about the impact of oil sands expansion and related tanker and pipeline projects on women and their communities – perspectives that are rarely heard in mainstream media.
Follow Breaking Ground: Women, Oil & Climate Change – A Nobel Women’s Delegation to Alberta and British Columbia on Facebook, Twitter (#breakingground) , Instagram (@nobelwomen) , and our Breaking Ground Blog as we meet with extraordinary First Nations and grassroots women leaders who are working to mitigate impacts of the oil sands and pipelines on the climate and their communities.
As peacebuilders and community leaders, women around the world have been at the forefront of movements to reduce the impacts of climate change and build healthy, sustainable environments. Recognizing their extraordinary efforts, the Nobel Women’s Initiative – through the vision of the late Nobel Peace Laureate and grassroots environmentalist Wangari Maathai – has long been advocating for environmental peace and justice.
Breaking Ground: Women, Oil & Climate Change aims to amplify the voices of women on the impact of oil sands expansion as well as their calls for clean, renewable energy. We will meet with women activists and community leaders to hear first hand the challenges and impacts they are facing as a result of oil sands development – and the groundbreaking work they are doing to defend their lands and the environment.
By listening, learning, and amplifying women’s voices, we hope to engage new audiences on the impacts of oil expansion and the effects on climate change. We will bring the calls of women on the ground to decision makers in Canada, the United States, and around the world.
The delegation will travel to the oil sands of Alberta and follow the route of the Northern Gateway pipeline into British Colombia, stopping in affected communities and First Nations territories along the way.
