US Journalist Marie Colvin receives 2012 Anna Politkovskaya Award
American journalist Marie Colvin is this year’s posthumous recipient of the Anna Politkovskaya Award. Marie reported on almost every major conflict in recent history, and was driven by her mission to bear witness to the suffering of civilians in conflict.
RAW in WAR (Reach All Women in WAR) annually presents the Anna Politkovskaya Award to acknowledge the anniversary of Anna Politkovskaya’s murder on 7th October 2006. The award is presented to a woman human rights defender from a conflict zone that stands up for victims of the conflict, often at great personal risk. Previous award winners include 2011 recipient Razan Zaitouneh, human rights lawyer & journalist (Syria) and Dr. Halima Bashir in 2010 (Darfur/ Sudan).
Marie talked about the dangers of being a war correspondent, yet she did not let this danger prevent her from reporting on violence occurring throughout the world. She passed away in February 2012 during a missile attack in Homs where she was reporting on some of the most brutal violence occurring in Syria. According to RAW in WAR, “She had defied the ban on foreign journalists imposed by the Syrian government and entered the country on the back of a motorcycle – ensuring the world would hear about the atrocities against civilians that continue there to this day; hoping that the world would care.”
The Nobel Women’s Initiative, along with women human rights defenders throughout the world, will remember Marie Colvin for her courage and conviction to tell the stories of those unknown and report on the atrocities committed against innocent women and children.
“Our mission is to speak the truth to power. We send home that first rough draft of history. We can and do make a difference in exposing the horrors of war and especially the atrocities that befall civilians…The real difficulty is having enough faith in humanity to believe that enough people be they government, military or the man on the street, will care when your file reaches the printed page, the website or the TV screen…We do have that faith because we believe we do make a difference.”
