Call For End To Crack-down In Tibet
Ten young Tibetans- seven of them current or former monks from Kirti Monastery near Ngaba – have set fire to themselves in Tibet since March 2011. Seven of them have occurred since 26 September and five have died, including a nun from Ngaba.
The Tibetans are calling for basic human rights and freedom from the harsh policies of China. Thousands of Chinese troops are currently stationed in the area and monks and nuns have been subjected to brutal “patriotic re-education’ programs. Chinese security forces are beating and disappearing monks and have laid siege to monasteries, even killing elderly people defending them.
Nobel Peace Laureates Jody Williams and Shirin Ebadi among many other prominent signatories have signed the Stand Up for Tibet petition, in hopes of raising global awareness and promoting global intervention against the growing Chinese crackdown against the Tibetan people.
