Letter to Released Iranian Activist Narges Mohammadi

_41761772_evinwoman_afp203bNobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi has written a letter to her dear friend and colleague Narges Mohammadi, who was arrested in her home by Iranian officials on June 10.

The letter describes the events leading up to Mohammadi’s arrest and what has happened to her during and after her detention. She was detained for 3 weeks in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison and released on July 1. The arrest is viewed as an attempt to impede her work as a human rights defender.

Mohammadi is a prominent Iranian human rights activists and journalist. She is a currently president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center, and independent organization founded by Shirin Ebadi in 2001 that provides pro-bono defense to political prisoners and prisoners of conscience and monitors human rights abuses in Iran. She is also the Executive Director of the Iranian Peace Council, and 2009 recipient of the Alexander Larger Award for human rights work.
