European Union Complicit in Crimes Against Palestinian People: Russell Tribunal
Nobel Laureate Mairead Maguire participated in a tribunal last week that examined human rights violations in Palestine. The international community’s complicit involvement in this ongoing conflict was the main focus of the Russell Tribunal, held in Barcelona, Spain.
Maguire played a critical role in the proceedings, as a member of a panel of jurists of activists, politicians, judges and human rights experts. Over two days the esteemed jury heard evidence of the connections between the crimes against Palestinians being perpetrated by Israel on the ground, and the role of international sponsors, particularly the European Union.
For years, Israel has denied Palestine its right to self-determination by occupying its land, waging war on its citizens and blockading them economically. The goal of the Russell Tribunal was to show that Israel has not been alone in its oppression of the Palestinian people. European countries have enabled these actions by giving Israel economic, military and diplomatic support.
This is the first of four sessions of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine. It comes at a crucial moment — one year after the conflict in Gaza.
