Two Peace Laureates Join Blockade of Nuclear Weapons Establishment
Mairead Maguire and Jody Williams participated in a blockade of Aldermaston Weapons Establishment (AWE) in
the UK on February 15. All 8 gates allowing access for staff and materials were blocked for 3 hours, stopping work and raising awareness of the illegality of the work performed inside AWE. The blockade called for the UK to stop the expansion of AWE and the development of a new generation of nuclear weapons.
The Laureates joined other women in a Women's Gate to amplify the unique messages of women against nuclear weapons and for human security:
- Women experience violence in war and peace. Experience teaches us that there's a link between military violence and masculine violence against women. We say no to all violence – no to the huge violence of nuclear weapons, but also no to the individual violence of rape and assault against women, worldwide, everyday.
- Women want our taxes to be spent on health, schools, housing and other services that support the work so many women do, paid and unpaid, in everyday life — not on nuclear weapons!
