Laureates Support Women’s Human Rights Week in Honduras
The Nobel Women’s Initiative stands in solidarity with the Honduran Feminists in Resistance, all women and activists in Honduras who continue their fight for the restoration of democracy in their country.
In addition, we express our support for the Women’s Human Rights Week in Honduras, an international delegation to Honduras from August 17 to 21, 2009.
This delegation is part of a joint effort by Honduran Feminists in Resistance, Feminist Radio International Endeavor (FIRE), JASS (Just Associates), Las Petateras, Consortium for Parliamentary Dialogue and Equality, and the Nobel Women’s Initiative. The delegation of feminist and human rights activists are travelling to Honduras to document and report violations of human rights committed following the June 28th military coup.
As a result of the coup, human rights abuses and attacks against women by the military have dramatically increased. Women’s organizations also continue to be repressed as they demand the end of the de facto regime. Nobel Laureate Rigoberta Menchú Tum has reported that “as it usually happens, women’s human rights have been violated and have been left to a situation of utter vulnerability.”
